This
old farmhouse, located in the hills around Lucca just 12 Kms from
the town, was bought by the famous film director, David Lean, for
its beautiful and unique position. It is situated on a hill, close
to the small hamlet of Valgiano, with views over one of the most beautiful
landscapes in the area. The present owners have totally restored the
property. Their restoration was done with great taste and charm using
authentic materials, including terracotta tiles and beamed ceilings.
At the same time, the house is equipped with all modern conveniences.
The original structure, consisting of the main house, the old hayloft
and a small barn has been retained. The English-speaking housekeeper
lives at the back of the house in a completely independent apartment,
and she is available to cook or to give cooking classes. She specializes
in local cuisine using only the best local ingredients, including
olive oil made on the property. A private banquet-size dining room
has also been restored to offer a high quality gastronomic experience
to the guests at Al Carli.
