In
the heart of Renaissance Florence, a large, elegant apartment overlooks
the Arno one block downstream from the Excelsior and Grand hotels.
It is a five-to ten-minute walk to the Uffizi and all the other museums,
the Duomo, and all the other sights. The
apartment has more than 2,000 square feet of living space. It is on
the second floor (American style) of a 19th Century palazzo built
in the classic Florentine style.
The view includes the "Oltrarno"
section of the city, with Brunelleschi's Santo Spirito and the Pitti
Palace, and beyond are the Belvedere Fortress and the Bellosguardo
hill, dotted with ancient villas visited by Dante and Boccaccio, with
their olive groves, vineyards, and 600-year old cypresses. If you
look out the windows to your left, you see the palaces lining the
Arno and the Ponte Vecchio.
Three rooms in the front of the apartment,
the living room, dining room, and study, overlook the Arno. All three
rooms have high ceilings, elegant moldings, and period furniture.
The dining room table seats eight adults and there is a queen-size
sleep-sofa in the living room and a smaller sleep-sofa in the study.
The master bedroom has a queen-size bed, a large armoire, a dresser,
and a desk. It has a window facing on an interior courtyard, which
provides cool air in the summer, but no view. The master bathroom
has a bath with a shower and a bidet.
A second bedroom has a double bed. A door leads
onto the covered terrace in the back of the apartment. There is a
small bathroom off this bedroom with a toilet, sink, and shower. A
small bedroom is off the master bedroom. It has a single bed and an
armoire. It also has a shuttered doorway leading to the covered terrace.
The eat-in kitchen has just been upgraded in the latest Italian style.
It is fully equipped with a gas stove, a refrigerator, which is very
large by European standards, a washing machine, and a dishwasher.
There is an elevator and there are air conditioning
units in the master bedroom, the dining room, and in the second bedroom.
There is central heating, controlled by the tenant. In the back of
the apartment is a large, covered terrace approximately 20 feet square.
The apartment is also fully stocked with bed linens, towels, pots,
pans, china, cable television, cd-player etc.
Lastly, many of Florence's most celebrated
restaurants are in the neighborhood, but if you want to cook in the
apartment, there are also superb butchers, bakers, fruit and vegetable
vendors, a fish-monger etc. The main city food market is at San Lorenzo,
which is 10 minutes by foot, and there is also an excellent modern
supermarket 10 minutes away by foot.
